Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear is from Capitan, New Mexico, about an hour drive from Roswell. I didn't know the story of Smokey until visiting the park. He was found as a cub, clinging to the top of a charred tree after a forest fire. The poor little guy had burns on his paws.

UFO Festival

This past weekend was the UFO Festival in Roswell. Thinking it would be fun and lots of people would be in town, I made alien finger puppets to sell. Well, Roswell's idea of a festival is far different from my own. Lame-O is the best way to describe it.

Michael and I dressed up to judge the pet costume contest. We were the only ones, aside from the dogs, that were dressed as aliens.

Dairy Fest

Matt took advantage of the milk carton suits at Dairy Fest (sorry, the video is a little jumpy).

Dairy Fest was pretty amazing. For a one dollar admission you could have all the chocolate milk, ice cream sandwiches, string cheese, butter, yogurt, cheese burgers, and coke floats that your heart desired. Michael even made the newspaper.

Marfa

Last week during Heather and Mel's visit, we took a trip down to Marfa. The landscape in Texas just before Marfa was beautiful.

We stopped at this exhibit along the way. Surprisingly, NPR was being played inside. During this stop I learned that rattlesnakes don't like me. A few flew into a rattling frenzy when I looked at them.

We took the tours at the Chinati Foundation. Our first tour guide was less than stellar. The second guide didn't like us having fun around art. This building housed the Judds.

I may have enjoyed looking into the building more so than being in the building.

My mom and sister came out for a visit recently and we went to White Sands for an afternoon. I got to walk some trails we hadn't done the first time I visited.

White Sands and the Batmobile

Our friend Jen came to visit for a few days just after New Year's. We took a day trip to White Sands National Monument and on the way saw the Batmobile and the General Lee. Of course we had to have our pictures taken with the cars.

The sands - gypsum - are beautiful. We hiked the Alkali Flat Trail which goes into the heart of the dunes and is 4.6 miles long.

New Year's Eve was a lot of fun. I only started taking pictures half way through the evening, so it's safe to assume that lots of eating and drinking occurred prior to these shots.

To help us celebrate the evening Jimmy made cascarones (eggs filled with confetti) which we got to smash on Michael's head.

Wind Storms

Yesterday afternoon we got a crazy wind storm which blew up all sorts of dust (the haze in the photo) and tumbleweeds. Michael and I watched out our back window as tumbleweeds whipped past the field (the dark circles in the field above). Also, I'm writing this post because I couldn't sleep this morning as another wind storm is blowing through.

Michael and I recently purchased a new kitchen appliance, a slow cooker. I love my new baby, especially for it's ability to make creamy, cheesy goodness, and soup.

Note: I haven't made creamy, cheesy goodness with it yet, mostly soup, but I still admire it's potential.

As part of his St. Nick's Day present, I let Michael choose a cookie recipe to make from the Martha Stewart cookie cookbook (see side bar). Continuing his current love affair with ground grains (don't get him started on oat bran), he chose the cornmeal thyme cookies.

Despite the fact that I never would have picked these cookies - there were too many options with chocolate as an ingredient - they were pretty good.

Bottomless Lakes

During Kris' stay, we also went to Bottomless Lakes, a state park just outside of Roswell. The lakes were formed by sink holes that filled with water.

There's lots of hiking in the park, as well as swimming, camping, and fishing. They stock a few of the lakes with rainbow trout. I even tried one today fresh from the lake to the grill. Delicious!

The playground was fun, but the slides were full of static electricity. That's why I'm screaming. It was a shocking experience. Literally.

Carlsbad Caverns

Kris came to visit us this past week and during her stay we took a trip down to Carlsbad Caverns. It was a beautiful day, and the park was amazing. Above is a waterless water hole.

Michael forced us to sit in this alcove. I didn't want to just in case a snake was waiting to attack us and eat us for dinner. Don't worry. No snake sightings.

There are two ways to enter the cave, the natural entrance and an elevator. We took the natural enterance. This is Michael just before we said good-bye to sunlight and made our descent into the cave.

We were there too late in the season, but from spring until fall, you can watch the bats fly out of this cave at dusk.

Since we had a visitor, Michael and I finally made it to the International UFO Museum and Research Center. If you are thinking about paying it a visit yourself, make sure you go on a day when you feel like reading, A LOT. For the most part the museum consists of newspaper articles, affidavits, personal accounts and wordy posters of what happened in Roswell in July of 1947 and anything remotely related since then. However, they do have some weird displays and posters (see below) that make it pretty enjoyable.

For my birthday this week my mom came to New Mexico. We made the journey up to Santa Fe, as none of us had been there before. We did some shopping - that seems to be mostly what they have in Santa Fe, lots and lots of shops - had some food and super good beer (finally!) and saw some sites. These pictures are from the oldest church structure in America, San Miguel, built in 1610.

The other night Michael and I went to Bitter Lake at sunset to see the birds landing for the night on their migratory route. We'd been to Bitter Lake one time before - it's just a few miles down the road from our house - and it was beautiful, but this time, with the birds and all their different chirps in unison, it was indescribable.

We also got to see a tarantula up close as he crossed the path in front of us.

When we first pulled into the refuge, there weren't many birds to be seen. Within five minutes of arriving, we could see packs of birds continuously approaching from all directions.

I took Michael to the Roswell Zoo this weekend. It's a small zoo, but it's free and you can get up close and personal with the animals.

This cute little thing couldn't get enough love.

I don't know what this animal is, but I like to refer to it as the rabbit-headed mini deer.

Prairie dogs are EVERYWHERE.

There's even a bear.

Akimbo is the prettiest llama in the petting zoo.

Right before we left, Michael was eaten by a lion. It was a fun afternoon.

Roswell Mural

A couple of days this past week, Michael and I helped hang a mural. Conceived of as a way to help enliven a declining neighborhood in Roswell, former RAIR artist, Theresa Pfarr (a Cincinnatian) and Adina Zamora (she lives on the residency with her husband) led the community in painting the mural. Over the course of a couple of months, the community worked on the 10 x 70 ft. mural which is painted on 5 x 5 ft. squares of parachute cloth. Because the mural is 30 ft. up on the building, a lift and extra hands were required to hang it. That's where Michael and I came in.

Today was the dedication of the mural for St. John the Baptist Church. The mural is on the side of their Ave Maria Center. There was a procession with lots of amazing dancers.

Fr. Juan was wearing his bling for the occasion. He blessed the mural with holy water and even gave a shout out to a church in Cincinnati - I guess he lived there for a short time. Fr. Juan also made us lunch each day we worked on hanging the mural. He made us hamburgers one day and soup the next. Michael ate two hamburgers on the first day because Fr. Juan strongly suggested he have another. For the rest of the day Michael thought he was going to barf. The second day, Michael made me try banana pudding that Fr. Juan made. He got me to agree to eating bananas by saying there was cinnamon in the pudding. There was, but it still tasted like bananas. It was my turn to want to barf.

Late Bloomer

We adopted a plant when we first arrived in Roswell. This week it decided to bloom making the living room feel a little more like spring and a little less like fall.

Balloon Fiesta

Yesterday afternoon Michael and I made the journey to Albuquerque to see this year's Balloon Fiesta. We didn't see anything like the photo above, the Mass Ascension, which is the early morning event, but we did see the Glowdeo. Despite its name, the Glowdeo was the most enchanting thing I've seen in a long, long time. Basically, the balloons begin inflating at dusk and are aglow as night falls. I had so much fun and took so many pictures that I had a hard time editing, sorry for the crazy number of photos below.

We had to eat as soon as we got there. We tried the tamale boat which was good 'n spicy. Then we had a burrito that won best burrito for this year's Fiesta. We were disappointed at first to find out it was a breakfast burrito, but then, after a few bites, we learned why it won. Delicious! It even had green chiles.

This man was rocking the house with oldies for hours. He looked to be Bob Barker's brother and his leather pants were quite the hit with the ladies.

Even Imperial Storm Troopers were there to guard the Darth Vader balloon.

We followed the basic progression of inflating the balloons with the blue dragon balloon. First, they layed out a tarp to protect the balloon from whatever might be in the grass.

Then they carried out the balloon and unrolled it.

Eventually they hooked it up to the basket and began inflating.

The balloonists had to get crazy close to the fire. It was amazing to watch them work.

This Glowdeo featured only the shaped balloons of the Fiesta.

I loved the sad clown with his happy friends.

You can get a sense of how big these balloon are with these two picutes. Above, Michael standing near the green dragon (he's in the oragne shirt) and below, me near it (I'm holding a light colored jacket).

The night ended with a fireworks display. Definitely not as good as the Labor Day fireworks back home, but we left smiling.

Butternut squash soup

86 Years Down Home Country Fair

Yesterday, Michael and I went to the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. The cows were beautiful.

Although there wasn't any signage, I assumed these Hannibal goats were pretty dangerous. In addition to the cows and goats, we saw an entire pavilion of sleeping pigs, rabbits, and scary, scary chickens, roosters, and turkeys.

This (above pic) was a competition where the driver had to maneuver the grader over tennis balls sitting on construction cones. This guy knocked over two. I don't think he did very well.

For lunch we had a bbq brisket sandwich and corndog.

Recent Work

For the past few months I've been collecting ceramic animals wearing clothes and am making cross-stitch portraits of them to be compiled into a family tree of sorts.

Parade Day

Today was the parade to kick-off the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Here at the residency, Nancy has been busy getting the float ready for the Democratic Party of Chavez County and this past week I've helped with some sign painting. You can see my handiwork above, "86 Years Down Home Country Fair".

Our float was totally the best one there.

I painted the sign on top too.

Our float was "powered by people." We didn't didn't use any fossil fuels on the parade route, just our muscles to push/pull the float down Main Street.

Not surprisingly, however, the Republicans used a mega bus to burn away our resources as it drove the parade route.

The route was about three miles straight down Main Street and the sidewalks were packed the entire way. Parade Day is a big deal in Roswell and all the schools were closed for the day.

We're in McCain country down here but I was surprised at how many people cheered for us. Don't get me wrong, I saw a lot of cranky old men booing while giving a double thumbs down, but the number of people in support of Obama was much greater than I expected.

I was the last member of Team Pin Cushion.

Michael helped out Senator Udall who is running for re-election by wearing his shirt. He also waved to old ladies who were not happy about Democrats.

I made my first crumbly topped baked good yesterday. It's a peach coffee-cake-like thing. Michael ate half of it all by himself last night.

I also made my first pair of mittens yesterday and Michael helped me photograph them.

Patterns and such

You've all been asking, well, at least two of you have, so here it is, the link to the pattern for this reusable shopping bag. I found it on a site, Burda Style, which has free patterns that you can print at home. The bag I made for my mom was so cute and easy I thought I'd make one with my left over apple fabric. I altered the pattern using bias tape instead of buying a surger. Much more economical.

I also made these cupcakes yesterday. You may have seen them on the cover of last year's December issue of Cooking Light. Michael liked them so much he begged me to make them into Ding Dongs/King Dongs/King Dons (see Wikipedia for name clarification). Maybe next time Mr. Stillion. Maybe next time.

I found a pattern for a reusable shopping bag that looked pretty easy so I thought I'd try it. It's a birthday present for my mom so hopefully she'll heed my warnings and not look. The picture below is of the built in pocket so that you can fold the bag up and carry it easily. I can't wait to make more!

We went to Portales last night to see an exhibition - Dry Heat (I came up with the title) - of works done by the resident's here in Roswell. In these photos I tried my best to be unimpressed by Michael's paintings.

It turns out that the person who organized the show, Mollie, went to the same high school that I did back in the 'nati. Westsideness in New Mexico is more than a little strange.

Baking Bread

There's this really great sourdough bread starter that has been passed around by the residents and I recently got my hands on some. I've been busy the past few days tending to the needs of the dough. Now I have these beautiful loaves of bread.

As a part of my new occupational series where I become (or at least pretend to become) what I dreamed of in childhood (or possibly last week), I've decided to become my own Martha Stewart.

Step one: Make a cute, durable, machine washable work skirt. It's reversible too! What a great skirt, easy and very marketable.

Step two: Bake cookies. Not as simple as you might think. With a new hand held mixer I should be able to take over the world with my cookie making powers. However, the mixer is very powerful and instead of making magical dough, I took a sugar shower, which would have been nice on my skin but not so nice on my shirt. It will also put the machine washability of my new skirt to the test. Also, the recipe I choose must have been created by someone wanting to take down my new empire because the dough ended up being the consistency of sand and the first batch looked like rocks. Much to my disappointment they tasted good, like chocolate chip cookies should.

I did get so mad that I made this drawing of my woes.

Jesse James Wax Museum

We visited the Jesse James Wax Museum in Stanton, MO. According to the museum, Jesse James was not shot and killed by Robert Ford. Instead he lived to be over 100 years old. Below is a picture of him at his birthday party. He's the one lying in bed.

For approximately one and one half hours on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, Michael had a mustache. At first it was funny. Then it was creepy. Ridiculously creepy.
